Honorable mention goes to the Write Great Fiction Series by Writer's Digest. You must develop them, and give them the nurturing they need. Take Joy: A Writer's Guide to Loving the Craft by Jane Yolen. Frey's series of books on writing– my favorite being The Key–How to write a damn good novel using the power of myth. I own Beginnings, Middles, & Ends, Plot & Structure, and Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint, and they are all great reference books. Book: Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint: Techniques and Exercises for Crafting Dynamic Characters and Effective Viewpoints (Write Great Fiction) Author: Nancy Kress Pages: 240. Tess Collins suggests The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri. (See: Write Great Fiction: Characters, Emotion, & View Point). Writing can be dissected analytically but there is always a component of emotional appeal that makes writing connect. In particular, I believe great non-fiction writing out-punches the good because it manages not only to articulate ideas succinctly and clearly, but to show how they overlap and interconnect. The entire Write Great Fiction Series by Writers Digest, specifically Plot & Structure, Conflict, Action and Suspense, and Characters, Emotion and Viewpoint. Liskow says Nancy Kress's book, Characters Emotion & Viewpoint is terrific for character work, and Jack Bickham's Scene & Structure is a must. Even “plot driven” stories need strong, multifaceted characters. If you even suspect that you may also fall prey to this difficulty, please read the guide “Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint” by Nancy Kress, which is part of the Writer's Digest “Write Great Fiction” series. For example, Twitter's 140 characters means certain grammar rules are expected to be broken.
